How the stock market works

A fwd mail I got..

“Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort.

He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms.

The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers; “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.

The villagers rounded up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere! Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works. “

Funny Side of Linux

Even if you are a non-user of Linux, you will find this funny. Have a look.

A Javascript Verifier

“JSLint takes a JavaScript source and scans it. If it finds a problem, it returns a message describing the problem and an approximate location within the source. The problem is not necessarily a syntax error, although it often is. JSLint looks at some style conventions as well as structural problems..”

If you think debugging javascript is painful and finding the root cause from the error messages are annoying at times, then this site is for you.

P.S: Watch out for the tips on using ‘===’, ‘!==’ over ‘==’, ‘!=’ while comparing. I never knew the existence of ‘===’ operator , till visiting the site.

Programmers Don’t Like to Code

“….

Programmers don’t like to code, we like to solve problems. Coding is not problem solving, but software problem solving usually involves some coding. Even when we talk about rewriting something, the objective is not to code, it’s usually to get a better understanding of the problem for solving in the best possible manner.

Some interesting facts about Google

“The prime reason the Google home page is so bare is due to the fact that the founders didn’t know HTML and just wanted a quick interface.”

” The name ‘Google’ was an accident. A spelling mistake made by the original founders who thought they were going for ‘Googol’”

Pachai kili Muthusaram Review

Hats-off to Gautham Menon for taking this kind of a movie in Tamil though the plot and some scenes are taken(stolen?!) from the Hollywood movie Derailed which was based on a novel.

Arvind Krishna is an apt choice as he recreated Pudhupettai magic all again. Most of the film scenes were shooted at a very dim light. Picturisation of songs are also very good.

Harris Jayaraj again screwed up the BGM by inserting weird sounds/voices where silence would have been the best treatment. I thought of very high about this guy after Khakka Khakka. But I changed my views after his string of stupid scores in Ghajini, Anniyan and Vettaiyadu Vilayadu. The only positive thing about him is song compositions are generally good and most of them are big hits.

Decent performance by the all the actors.

Overall this is a very good movie and I enjoyed it a lot.

Unusual Injuries

“…

Sidelined after breaking a finger at the start of the 2006-07 season, Hayden decided to keep fit by going for a leisurely jog. Unfortunately, while running he was set on by a local dog and had to be taken to hospital with a 5cm gash in his ankle. “It was a vicious attack,” he said. “I was just out for a leisurely run. You are always a bit shocked by that sort of thing, but I was more disappointed than anything. It just hasn’t been my week.”

…”

Here is XI instances where players found bizarre ways of sidelining themselves. Good collection by the Cricinfo XI columnist Martin Williamson.

The ‘Guru’ talks

Maniratnam talks about shooting songs, the importance of entertainment, and what makes him angry.

“…
Do the reactions of people really matter to you?
Does it hurt you when people do not accept your film?
When you create a film, do you think of the audience? Or do you look at it purely as a means of self-expression?
What is more important, the content or the format?

Business Ethics

A father is explaining ethics to his son, who is about to go into business.

“Suppose a woman comes in and orders a hundred dollars worth of material. You wrap it up, and you give it to her. She pays you with a $100 bill. But as she goes out the door you realize she’s given you two $100 bills. Now, here’s where the ethics come in: should you or should you not tell your partner?”
